there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in

for the one with everything in life, why not get a raf simons beach towel? as part of his spring summer 2009 accessories collection, raf simons printed the very thought provoking line on the black beach towel (practical??). this is actually a line from leonard cohen's "anthem", where the web is abuzz with various interpretation on what he actually meant. for me, it's to celebrate the journey while we embark on the path to perfection, for there is no perfection without flaws.

this particular line seemed to have inspired many others, besides raf simons. one of my favourite cinematographers christopher doyle, who was for the longest time responsible for the lush movie landscapes of (again my favourite) auteur wong kar wai (in the mood for love, happy together, chungking express, 2046, my blueberry nights etc), aptly named his exhibition at a london gallery back in 2003 "there is a crack in everything". chris explains "to me it means accidents are providence, that so called mistakes should be appropriated, that nobody, no work is perfect and that may be why and where the light gets in; to illuminate in all meanings of the work. to expose again in all meanings of the word. and to validate the haphazardness of creation." i am still none the wiser...

I also enjoy wong kar wai's film quite a lot. About months ago i got the chance to lay my hands on the documentary of making "happy together", it was excellent, the whole process was exhiliarting, the many other alternative endings were worth to see. , and every soul has a lonely side; im guessing that's the key element which Wong tries to deliberate in every each of him film...........

  2. So intellectual and profound...even for a beach towel.

The quote leaves many ponders:-) and that is a good way to get people talking.

  3. It is very interesting for me to read this article. Thanks for it. I like such themes and anything connected to them. I would like to read a bit more soon.
