Raf Simons presented his first ready to wear collection for Christian Dior today during Paris Fashion Week. It was an eagerly anticipated show, with Hedi Slimane's YSL debut coming up tomorrow it was like the spar of the titans. Besides the clothes on the runway, what the designer wears when taking his bow is pretty symbolic too. Raf Simons wore a denim jacket with three painted red stripes when he ran across the runway to accept his accolades. Twitter was abuzz with questions: where was the jacket from, what was he trying to say?
Some were quick to point out that the denim jacket was from Helmut Lang, released in 1996, the year when Raf Simons started his menswear label. Signalling new beginnings? I am still full of regrets, that I do not have any original Helmut Lang. I must be about 13 or 14 during his glory days, before he sold his label to Prada. I should not have hesitated to spend all my lunch money on Lang.
