Renzo Rosso and Taiwanese actress Pace Wu attended the Viktor & Rolf show as part of Paris Fashion Week Haute-Couture Fall Winter 2013 at La Gaite Lyrique in Paris yesterday. Renzo, the president of OTB Group which owns majority stakes in Viktor & Rolf, Maison Martin Margiela, Diesel etc, showed his support for the Dutch duo in an abstract print jacket from Viktor & Rolf Spring Summer 2013, over a Diesel "Only the brave" t-shirt.

The dynamic Dutch duo made a much heralded return to the Paris Haute-Couture calendar after a 13 year absence. Their story is really interesting to me. They started their business in Couture, then branched out into Ready-To-Wear, pretty much opposite to what other designers did. It is very much documented that Couture is an expensive art/indulgence, a business that is often loss-making. But most fashion houses still do it, as it sets the image for the house and creates a demand for inspirational purchases and ancillary sales of lipsticks, perfumes etc. What's interesting is that, during the 13 year couture absence, they built a formidable fragrance empire. Per an interview between Renzo and Business Of Fashion, "FlowerBomb" is number four in sales worldwide and made about EUR100 million at wholesale. With that money and amazing success, they can now indulge in their first love, Couture.

That to me is a great and interesting business plan/venture. Can't say too much about the other much talked about Couture house, making it's umpteen revival with not much of a product, and no "cash cow" items to be seen. Hope that won't be an expensive vanity project.
