Montblanc Watches & Wonder 2013

00O00 Menswear Blog: Montblanc Watches & Wonder 2013
If you are a watch fan, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) needs no introduction. The annual event held in Geneva is heralded as a landmark event for the fine watch sector. In fashion speak, this is the "Geneva Fashion Week" for fine watch lovers. In recent years, we see designers moving and adapting some of their shows for the Asia market. Phillip Lim showed his entire collection in China recently, Christian Dior also presented their Couture collection there recently. It is not surprising since Asia's appetite for luxury goods is growing at an exponential rate. Last week saw the debut of a new event: Watches & Wonder 2013, which was held in Hong Kong. Billed as the SIHH of the East, Watches & Wonders 2013 offered true connoisseurs of haute horlogerie a feast of precision craftsmanship. 13 iconic European watchmakers presented their latest, rarest and most sought-after creations in this prestigious occasion.

Montblanc was one of the watchmakers present at the event, and three of Hong Kong's finest actors were on hand to showcase some very drool worthy timepieces. First up is Sean Lau Ching Wan [刘青云], who won Best Actor in 2007 at the Hong Kong Film Wards, the Oscars equivalent of the East.

Sean Lau wore the extraordinary Montblanc Villeret 1858 ExoTourbillon Rattrapante. The timepiece encompasses myriad high horlogical complications: an unconventional large balance positioned outside the tourbillon’s rotating cage, a split-second chronograph with two column-wheels and a classical double clamp, and an unprecedented three-dimensional regulator dial in gold and grand feu enamel. The exceptional creation shows the time in a second zone, includes a day/night indicator and is manufactured in a limited edition of only eighteen timepieces.

Nick Cheung Ka Fai [張家輝] was also at the event. You might find him familiar as I featured him previously on the blog (here and here). Nick, who was also crowned Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, wore the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours Platinum Automatic Watch. The timepiece was inspired by the dual-disc chronographs created by Nicolas Rieussec, the inventor of the world’s first patented chronograph 190 years ago.

I really love Nick's watch. I tried the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec watch recently during my travels in Singapore and fell in love with it. Love the platinum casing paired with the white watch face and grey alligator strap. Really stylish and classic.

Hong Kong actress Angelababy completed the trio for this amazing watch event. Do you prefer Sean or Nick's watch?

  1. I love Nick's watch, too. The Rieussec is probably my favorite Montblanc; however, I'm not too fond of the grey croc band -- the color is too dull.
He's wearing a great buttondown, though... Thom Browne FW13.

    1. I thought he wore Thom Browne too, but I wasn't sure since I couldn't see the label at the bottom! I love the grey strap though, it's more unusual and it looked great at the store.
